On the eve of graduation, the first-year students of Columbia University in New York have their first real test: How many students do they have at Columbia who are willing to teach at their school?
As students at Columbia’s public-private student-hosting company, WeWork, the answer has been a staggering 32.8 percent.
And it’s been a pretty good number in the past year, since a massive influx of new students was a key driver of the firm’s recent expansion.
But as more of those students have been offered internships on the company’s campuses, it’s starting to feel a bit like a test of how well the school can handle the new students.
The company’s hiring strategy for new students has been to try to recruit students who are “highly-motivated and enthusiastic about learning,” said the company spokeswoman, Jennifer Sullens.
The aim is to give them the time and resources to get their hands dirty and learn something new, she said.
That’s the approach Columbia’s now taking to the new class of interns, which Sullers described as “a new group of students.”
“This is the first time we have students who have a specific educational interest in the school,” she said in an email to the WSJ.
“Students from the Graduate Studies Program, our engineering program, and the College of Arts and Sciences have already had their first hands-on experience with a work-study job.”
The new students, who are typically between 18 and 30, typically have no previous experience in the classroom, and some have limited experience with computers or software.
But they have an understanding of technology and programming, which makes them perfect candidates for WeWork’s internships.
And that’s where Columbia comes in.
“WeWork is currently hiring students from Columbia University who have exceptional educational background, have the ability to learn in a work setting, and have the maturity to be able to learn from our experienced mentors,” Sullen said.
WeWork says that students will be offered unpaid internships as long as they’re able to complete the school’s internship program within the allotted time.
But Sulles said that students would not have to be on campus to take advantage of the internship.
“I do not have any information to share on the number of students who will be taking part,” she wrote.
In addition to the 22.8-percent number, the company has also offered several types of internships that would include a three-month paid internship for students who work with a team, an unpaid one for students with no prior experience in a particular subject area, and an unpaid internship for anyone who is interested in a new programming and/or computer science degree.
WeWork also recently announced plans to hire a new engineering program for students, one that would be more focused on digital marketing and social media management, which could help students build their resumes and build more of an online presence.
But those types of programs, like WeWork-sponsored internship programs, are usually limited to a select group of high school graduates who are already working in tech.
The WeWork internship program is open to students who graduate in the spring and fall of 2019.
It’s a bit of a departure from previous WeWork programs, in which the company typically offers a wide range of intern programs and also offers a second-year course that teaches students a “step-by-step” approach to becoming a tech-savvy software engineer.
In general, Sulls said, students would be offered the opportunity to learn more about technology, engineering, and coding by working in a WeWork office.
“Our focus will be on building our company and our community,” she added.
“These are people who have had an interest in learning technology and learning from our community.”
WeWork says it will also provide a second chance for students to learn about their field of study through internships at the company.
“While we have always offered a variety of opportunities to students at other universities, WeNetwork is the only program that is designed specifically to address the needs of a group of people who are interested in the field of technology or engineering,” said WeWork spokeswoman Sullins in an emailed statement.
“In addition, the program will give students a chance to learn and grow while working at a technology company.
The first year of the program is not limited to just students from the graduate school, but will include a group that includes both engineering and management students, as well as the first generation of college graduates.”
WeNetwork, the only WeWork program at Columbia, says it plans to offer a total of 150 internships throughout the year, including a three month paid internship at the end of the school year.
It said that the internship will be designed to give students the chance to develop a resume and gain experience in their chosen field.
Columbia has a history of offering internship programs that include both graduate students and students who recently completed a year at other schools.
But WeWork is far
